Target Information
Monensin is an ionophore antibiotic used in veterinary medicine, primarily as a feed additive for cattle, to improve feed efficiency and prevent coccidiosis. In poultry, it is used as a coccidiostat to control parasitic infections. The food safety concern arises from the potential for residues of monensin to be present in the edible tissues of treated animals, such as meat and liver. Regulatory bodies have established Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for monensin to ensure that food products from treated animals are safe for human consumption.
