Target Information

Microcystin-LR is highly relevant to the safety of animal-derived foods. It is a specific and particularly toxic variant of the microcystin family, produced by freshwater cyanobacteria. As these blue-green algae form harmful blooms in water bodies, fish and shellfish living in or drinking this water can accumulate Microcystin-LR in their tissues, primarily in the liver. This can lead to serious health issues for both the animals and for humans who consume contaminated aquatic products. Microcystin-LR is a known hepatotoxin (liver toxin) and is considered a potential human carcinogen, making its presence in the food chain a significant public health concern.
