Target Information

Levamisole is a synthetic imidazothiazole derivative used extensively in veterinary medicine as a broad-spectrum anthelmintic and occasional immunomodulator. It is primarily employed to treat gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodes in cattle, sheep, swine, and poultry. Its food safety significance arises from its potential toxicity and its history of being used as an adulterant. In food-producing animals, improper use or failure to observe withdrawal periods can lead to residues in meat, milk, and eggs. Since high doses in humans can cause adverse effects like nausea, dizziness, and even agranulocytosis (a serious blood condition), regulatory agencies have established strict Maximum Residue Limits to ensure consumer safety.
