Indomethacin is a potent non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used illegally or off-label in livestock farming to alleviate pain, fever, and inflammation in animals, or to mask symptoms of disease before slaughter. If withdrawal periods are ignored, its residues can contaminate animal-derived foods such as meat, milk, and offal. Ingestion of indomethacin residues by humans poses severe health risks, primarily causing gastrointestinal tract damage (such as bleeding, ulceration, and perforation), as well as potential renal impairment and hypersensitivity reactions.
