Hygromycin B is an aminoglycoside antibiotic produced by the bacterium Streptomyces hygroscopeicus. In agriculture, it is primarily used as an anthelmintic (dewormer) added to the feed of swine and poultry to control intestinal roundworms, nodular worms, and whipworms. Its relevance to food safety is significant because it can leave residues in edible tissues, such as pork and chicken meat, as well as in eggs. Excessive intake of these residues by consumers can lead to toxicological effects, including potential hearing loss (ototoxicity) and kidney damage (nephrotoxicity). Consequently, many countries have established strict Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) for its presence in animal-derived products.
