Target Information

Hydrochlorothiazide is a thiazide diuretic medication used to treat hypertension and edema. In animal husbandry, it is sometimes misused or administered off-label to livestock to treat physiological udder edema in dairy cows or illegally co-administered with growth promoters (like beta-agonists) to accelerate drug excretion and mask the illegal use of performance-enhancing substances before slaughter testing. Residues of hydrochlorothiazide in animal-derived foods like meat, kidneys, and milk can pose health risks to consumers, potentially causing electrolyte imbalances, dehydration, hypotension, and hypersensitivity reactions.
