Target Information
Melatonin, an indoleamine, is a naturally occurring compound found in various organisms such as bacteria and eukaryotes. In vertebrates, melatonin plays a crucial role in aligning sleep-wake cycles, including the regulation of sleep-wake timing and blood pressure, as well as managing seasonal rhythms (circannual cycles) that affect reproduction, fattening, molting, and hibernation. Previous studies have demonstrated that administering melatonin through gavage can cause testicular shrinkage in male golden hamsters. The use of hamsters in melatonin research has provided valuable insights into the hormone's role in various physiological processes.
