Target Information
Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), also known as 92 kDa type IV collagenase, 92 kDa gelatinase, or gelatinase B (GELB), is an enzyme belonging to the matrixin class within the zinc-metalloproteinase family, which plays a role in the degradation of the extracellular matrix. While direct studies on hamster MMP-9 are limited, its role is likely similar to that in other mammals, where it participates in basement membrane degradation and modulates various physiological processes. In a hamster model, it has been suggested that elastase may act as a physiological activator of MMP-9 in vivo. In Syrian hamsters, MMP-9 is not detected in the Harderian gland, but its presence is expected in other remodeling tissues.
