Target Information

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are proteins that contribute to the degradation of the extracellular matrix during normal physiological processes like embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in pathological conditions such as arthritis and metastasis. One enzyme in this family, matrix metalloproteinase-12 (MMP-12), also referred to as macrophage metalloelastase (MME) or macrophage elastase (ME), is believed to be involved in the formation of aneurysms. Hamsters, like other animals, have MMP's that are involved in normal tissue remodeling. Therefore, MMP12 plays a role in normal biological function.
