Target Information
Malondialdehyde (MDA) is a byproduct of lipid peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. It serves as a physiological metabolite and an indicator of oxidative stress. Hamsters are used as models for atherosclerosis, and MDA levels are measured to assess oxidative stress in the development of this disease. Studies examine how high-cholesterol diets and other factors influence MDA levels in hamster tissues and blood. In hamster models, heightened renal MDA levels following cadmium exposure may trigger the production of GSH (glutathione) in the kidneys, thereby preventing renal damage.
