Target Information
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is one of the five main types of lipoproteins responsible for transporting all fat molecules throughout the body in extracellular water. LDLs primarily carry cholesterol in the blood, as their main function is to deliver cholesterol to peripheral and liver cells. Cells use cholesterol for various purposes, including building cell membranes and synthesizing steroid hormones. The metabolism of LDL in hamsters closely resembles that in humans, with the majority of LDL being absorbed and broken down by the liver in hamsters.
