Target Information
In Guinea pigs, collagenase 3 is encoded by the MMP13 gene. Matrix metalloproteinase-13 (MMP-13) is the main enzyme responsible for cartilage degradation, primarily due to its unique ability to cleave type II collagen. As a key enzyme, collagenase 3 is crucial for the cleavage of type II collagen and significantly contributes to the breakdown of cartilage in osteoarthritic joints. Guinea pigs can be used as models for osteoarthritis, and MMP13's role in cartilage degradation is investigated. Guinea pigs can also be used in wound healing studies, and MMP13's role in collagen degradation and tissue remodeling is investigated.
