Target Information
Hemoglobin (Hb) is an iron-containing protein that enables the transport of oxygen in red blood cells and is present in nearly all vertebrates. Vertebrate hemoglobins display the characteristic globin fold that houses a heme group, allowing reversible binding of oxygen to its central iron atom. Hb contributes to pH buffering in the blood. Hb also plays a role in transporting carbon dioxide from tissues back to the lungs for exhalation. In guinea pigs, hemoglobin exhibits a higher affinity for oxygen compared to other animals of similar size and lifestyle, such as rats, shrews, hedgehogs, and deer mice.
