Target Information
Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) belongs to the neurotrophin family of growth factors, related to the well-known nerve growth factor (NGF) family, which also comprises NT-3 and NT-4/NT-5. BDNF targets specific neurons in both the central and peripheral nervous systems that express the TrkB receptor, aiding in the survival of existing neurons while promoting the growth and differentiation of new neurons and synapses. Studies suggest that a combined treatment of BDNF and neurotrophin-3 is more effective than either alone in preserving the auditory nerve in deafened guinea pigs.
