Target Information
Rabbit collagen type II alpha 1 (COL2A1) is a fibrillar collagen protein encoded by the Col2a1 gene in Oryctolagus cuniculus, mapped to chromosome 1. It belongs to the fibrillar collagen family, featuring conserved Gly-X-Y triple helix repeats, N-terminal propeptide and C-terminal telopeptide critical for fibril assembly. It localizes primarily to extracellular matrix, with tissue-specific expression in rabbit articular cartilage, hyaline cartilage and intervertebral disc, with no expression in skin or bone tissues. The protein forms homotrimeric collagen fibrils, with conserved motifs for cross-linking and structural integrity. Rabbit COL2A1 shares core functional domains with mammalian orthologs, and has distinct fibril density features differentiating it from COL1A1 and other fibrillar collagen isoforms.
