Francisella is a genus of Gram-negative bacteria characterized by small coccobacillary or rod-shaped, nonmotile organisms that are facultative intracellular parasites of macrophages. These species can persist in the environment for several weeks; however, paradoxically, they can be challenging to culture and sustain in the laboratory.
