Target Information
Cytochrome c oxidase (COX), a large transmembrane protein complex, is present in bacteria, archaea, and the mitochondria of eukaryotes. As the final enzyme in the respiratory electron transport chain, it operates within the cell membrane. COX receives electrons from four cytochrome c molecules and transfers them to one oxygen molecule and four protons, ultimately generating two water molecules. Interestingly, COXs from bird and fish heart mitochondria exhibit a simpler polypeptide composition compared to mammalian enzymes, consisting of 9-10 different polypeptides instead of the usual 13.
