Immunoglobulin M (IgM) is the largest and first antibody produced by the B cells of the immune system in response to an initial exposure to a foreign substance, such as a virus, bacterium, or toxin. It plays a crucial role in the acute phase of the immune response, providing the initial line of defense against new pathogens.
