Target Information
Kim-1 is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein significantly upregulated in the proximal tubule epithelia following ischemic or nephrotoxic injury. While virtually undetectable in healthy kidneys, its expression surges during acute tubular necrosis, making it a highly specific sensitive biomarker for renal damage. It functions as a phosphatidylserine receptor, mediating the phagocytosis of apoptotic cells and debris. Beyond diagnostics, it plays a critical role in immune regulation and serves as a cellular receptor for various viruses, including Hepatitis A.
