Target Information

Erythropoietin, encoded by the EPO gene in cats, is a glycoprotein cytokine primarily secreted by the kidneys in response to cellular hypoxia. It stimulates red blood cell production (erythropoiesis) in the bone marrow. Cats suffering from chronic kidney disease may develop nonregenerative anemia due to decreased production of erythropoietin.
