Target Information
5-Hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) is the main metabolite of serotonin. 5-Hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA), the primary metabolite of serotonin (5-HT), plays a crucial role in chemical analysis of urine samples to determine serotonin levels in the body. Clinically, it is most frequently tested for the diagnosis of carcinoid tumors arising from the enterochromaffin (Kultschitzsky) cells of the small intestine, which release substantial amounts of serotonin. In a feline brain tumor model, research showed that, in gray matter adjacent to the tumor, concentrations of dopamine and its metabolites homovanillic acid and 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid were significantly decreased from control, whereas 5-HIAA was increased.
