Target Information
In equine medicine, SDMA is a crucial biomarker for early renal dysfunction. It is produced by the post-translational methylation of arginine residues by protein arginine methyltransferases (PRMTs) and released into the blood during protein degradation. Because SDMA is primarily eliminated via glomerular filtration, elevated serum levels serve as a reliable indicator of a decreased Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR). Unlike creatinine, equine SDMA remains unaffected by the horse's significant muscle mass or high-protein exercise diets, allowing for earlier detection of kidney injury.
