Target Information
Haptoglobin is a protein produced by the liver. Its primary function is to find and attach itself to free hemoglobin in the blood. Haptoglobin is encoded by the HP gene in horses. Hp is a glycoprotein found within the α2-globulin and functions primarily as a vehicle for the removal of free hemoglobin (Hb) in cases of intravascular hemolysis. It is elevated in most cases of horses with clinical signs of inflammation.
