Target Information

Bilirubin (BR) is a red-orange compound produced in the normal catabolic pathway that breaks down heme in vertebrates. It passes through the liver and is eventually excreted from the body. Elevated levels of bilirubin may indicate various liver or bile duct issues. Bilirubin testing is done using a blood sample. A familial deficiency of bilirubin-uridine diphosphate glucuronyl transferase in horses may cause bilirubinemia.
