Target Information

Amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP) is a condition resulting from eating shellfish tainted with domoic acid, a marine biotoxin. This toxin functions as a neurotoxin in mammals, including humans, potentially leading to irreversible short-term memory loss, brain damage, and, in extreme cases, death. Domoic acid can bioaccumulate in various marine animals, including those that consume phytoplankton, like anchovies and sardines.
