Target Information
Dimethyl phthalate (DMP) is a low-molecular-weight phthalate ester used primarily as a plasticizer to increase flexibility in plastics, as well as a solvent in pesticides and animal insect repellents. DMP enters the animal-derived food chain via environmental accumulation in soil and water, contaminated livestock feed, or direct chemical migration from plastic food contact materials (such as processing equipment, milking tubes, and packaging). Because it is highly lipid-soluble, it readily migrates into fat-rich animal products like milk, meat, and eggs. DMP is recognized as an endocrine-disrupting chemical capable of interfering with human hormone systems, potentially causing reproductive and developmental toxicities upon chronic dietary exposure.
