Target Information
Coumaphos is a fat-soluble, organophosphate ectoparasiticide used in veterinary medicine to control ticks, mites, flies, and lice on livestock such as cattle, sheep, goats, and swine, as well as varroa mites in beehives. Because of its lipophilic nature, residues of coumaphos and its toxic oxygen analogue (coumaphos oxon) easily accumulate in fat tissues and readily transfer into milk, eggs, and honey. Ingestion of these contaminated animal-derived products can cause acetylcholinesterase inhibition in humans, leading to neurotoxicity. Consequently, strict maximum residue limits and withdrawal periods before slaughter or milking are strictly enforced globally to ensure consumer protection.
