Target Information
Concanavalin A (ConA) is a lectin originally extracted from the jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis). It is a homotetramer with each subunit binding a metallic atom. It has four binding sites, corresponding to the four subunits. ConA specifically binds to certain structures found in various sugars, glycoproteins, and glycolipids. Its main targets are internal and nonreducing terminal α-D-mannosyl and α-D-glucosyl groups. ConA can initiate cell division (mitogenesis), particularly in T-lymphocytes.
