Clenbuterol is a potent beta-agonist drug that has been illegally used as a growth promoter in livestock, particularly pigs and cattle. It is often referred to as "lean meat powder". When fed to animals at high doses, it increases muscle mass and reduces fat, leading to a higher lean-to-fat ratio. This practice is banned in many countries due to the serious health risks to humans who consume the meat. Clenbuterol residues can accumulate in animal tissues, especially the liver and lungs, and can cause symptoms such as heart palpitations, tremors, headaches, and nervousness in people who eat contaminated meat.
