Target Information

Chlortetracycline is a broad-spectrum tetracycline antibiotic widely used in veterinary medicine. It's administered to food-producing animals such as cattle, pigs, and poultry to treat and prevent a variety of bacterial infections. It is also commonly used at sub-therapeutic levels as a growth promoter. The food safety concern with chlortetracycline is the potential for its residues to remain in the edible tissues (meat, liver, kidney), milk, and eggs of treated animals. The presence of these residues in the human food chain can contribute to the development of antimicrobial resistance and may cause allergic reactions in sensitive people.
