Target Information

Chloramphenicol is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that was once widely used in veterinary medicine to treat infections in food-producing animals such as cattle, pigs, and poultry. However, its use has been banned in most countries, including the United States and the European Union, for animals intended for human consumption. This is due to a severe public health risk: chloramphenicol can cause a rare but fatal human disease called aplastic anemia, even at extremely low exposure levels.
