Target Information
Sphingomyelin is a type of sphingolipid found in animal cell membranes, especially in the membranous myelin sheath that surrounds some nerve cell axons. It is one of the few membrane phospholipids not synthesized from glycerol. It plays significant roles in signaling pathways, cell structure, and cell metabolism. It is widely accepted that a decrease in ceramide synthesis leads to a decrease in sphingomyelin synthesis.
