Pentosidine (PTD) is a biomarker for advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which play a pivotal role in the development various degenerative diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, stroke, neuropathy, and nephropathy. AGEs are biochemicals formed continuously under normal circumstances, but their production accelerates under various stresses, especially oxidative stress and hyperglycemia. AGEs serve as markers of stress and can act as toxins themselves.
