Target Information

SP-A1 is mainly synthesized in type II alveolar cells of the lungs and is part of a lipid and protein complex called pulmonary surfactant. The function of this complex is to reduce the surface tension of the alveoli and prevent them from collapsing during exhalation. Research showed that SAP purified from canine lung surfactant is a potent inhibitor of the surfactant secretion from type II cells in vitro and may play an important role in homeostasis of surfactant in the alveolar space.
