Target Information

Procalcitonin (PCT) is a peptide precursor to the hormone calcitonin, which is involved in the regulation of calcium levels in the body. It is produced when preprocalcitonin is cleaved by endopeptidase. As a biomarker, PCT is released in response to bacterial infections and can be used to distinguish the underlying causes of infectious processes. PCT has a higher specificity and sensitivity compared to C-reactive protein (CRP) and is therefore valuable in the diagnosis of infections. In dogs with sepsis, PCT levels at the time of hospital admission can predict organ dysfunction and septic shock.
