Target Information
Bone alkaline phosphatase (BALP) is the bone-specific variant of alkaline phosphatase, a glycoprotein located on the surface of osteoblasts. It serves as an indicator of the biosynthetic activity of these bone-producing cells. In dogs, abnormal thyroid function (e.g., hypothyroidism) may result in elevated alkaline phosphatase activity. Studies have shown that hypothyroidism may indirectly affect bone alkaline phosphatase activity by inducing steroid kinase-1 (steroid sulfatase) expression. Abnormalities in liver function may also lead to elevated serum alkaline phosphatase activity. In dogs, BALP holds promise as a marker for bone formation.
