Brombuterol is a synthetic beta2-adrenergic receptor agonist structurally very similar to clenbuterol, with bromine atoms substituting the chlorine atoms on the aromatic ring. Like other compounds in this class, it is notoriously misused as an illegal "lean meat powder" feed additive in livestock farming, particularly for swine and cattle.When added to animal feed, brombuterol acts as a partitioning agent. It dramatically redirects nutrients away from fat deposition and toward the synthesis of skeletal muscle tissue, artificially inflating the lean meat yield and accelerating growth rates.
