Vitamin D exists in 2 forms that are important regarding the vitamin D status and supply to cattle: vitamin D2 (D2), which is produced by fungi growing on plant material used as roughage for cattle, and vitamin D3 (D3), which is either produced endogenously in the skin of the animals during exposure to sunlight or given in the feed as synthetic additives.
