Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) is an organic compound that belongs to the class of amine oxides. TMAO consists of a trimethylamine group (three methyl groups attached to a nitrogen atom) and an oxygen atom. It is a gut microbial-derived metabolite that has been suggested as a potential regulator of human health. Research has shown that intravenous TMAO infusion does not modify circulating markers of liver health, glucose tolerance, and milk production in early-lactation cows.
