Bovine Selenoprotein S, encoded by the SELENOS gene, is a multifunctional protein with diverse cellular roles. Its primary function lies in the ER-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway, where it facilitates the extraction of misfolded proteins or misassembled protein complexes from the ER to the cytosol for subsequent degradation by the proteasome. Additionally, Selenoprotein S acts as a guardian, removing misfolded proteins from the ER lumen and safeguarding cells against oxidative damage and apoptosis.
