Target Information

Gastrin is encoded by the GAST gene in cattle. It regulates gastric acid secretion and mucosal cell growth. Gastrin is synthetized mainly in antral G-cells, which produce different bioactive forms by elaborate covalent modifications of preprogastrin. Measurement of plasma Gastrin levels has been shown to be valuable in the diagnosis of hemorrhagic gastric ulcers in cattle. Studies have shown that plasma Gastrin levels are significantly elevated in cattle with hemorrhagic gastric ulcers. In dairy cows, changes in Gastrin levels have been associated with the development of gastric torsion. Plasma Gastrin levels were found to be significantly elevated in cows with gastric torsion.
