Target Information
Aspartoacylase (ASPA), also known as aminoacylase II, is an enzyme encoded by the ASPA gene in cattle. ASPA catalyzes the deacylation of N-acetyl-L-aspartate (NAA) into aspartate and acetate. It is a zinc-dependent hydrolase that promotes the deprotonation of water to use as a nucleophile, similar to other zinc-dependent hydrolases. Research has shown that aspartoacylase is conserved across species during evolution. Aspartoacylase and N-acetylaspartic acid play a significant role in normal brain biology.
