Target Information
Bordetella is a genus of small, Gram-negative, coccobacilli bacteria belonging to the phylum Pseudomonadota. Except for Bordetella petrii, all Bordetella species are obligate aerobes and are highly fastidious, making them challenging to culture. There are approximately 16 different species within this genus, believed to have evolved from ancestors that inhabited soil and/or water environments. Bordetella pertussis and occasionally Bordetella parapertussis are responsible for causing pertussis, or whooping cough, in humans, while some strains of Bordetella parapertussis only colonize sheep. Additionally, Bordetella species have been associated with causing bronchitis in cats and bronchopneumonia in pigs.
