Target Information
Benzoic Acid is a common organic acid used as an antimicrobial preservative in both human food and animal feed. In the context of animal-derived food safety, it is often added to swine and poultry diets to improve gut health and performance by acidifying the gastrointestinal tract and inhibiting pathogenic bacteria like E. coli. While generally recognized as safe (GRAS) at controlled levels, excessive use can lead to accumulation in animal tissues (meat) or excretion into milk. In feline species, benzoic acid is particularly toxic due to their low glucuronidation capacity, making its presence in pet food or unintended carryover in the food chain a point of regulatory monitoring.
