Target Information
Basic Orange is an industrial, synthetic cationic azo dye primarily intended for coloring textiles, leather, and paper. Because of its cheap cost and bright, long-lasting hue, it is a notorious illegal food additive sometimes used to artificially enhance or mimic the fresh appearance of various foods, including animal-derived products like poultry skin, egg yolks, and specific seafood matrices (such as tuna and processed fish products). It poses significant food safety risks as it exhibits acute toxicity, genotoxicity, and carcinogenicity. Upon metabolic breakdown in humans and animals, it can cleave into mutagenic aromatic amines, leading to its strict prohibition in food products globally.
