Target Information

Bacillus cereus is a pathogenic bacterium found in food, capable of causing emesis and diarrhea. The diarrheal illness is caused by enterotoxins. B. cereus strains produce up to six toxins, including five enterotoxins and one emetic toxin. The enterotoxins include enterotoxin T (BceT), enterotoxin FM (EntFM), hemolysin BL (HBL), nonhemolytic enterotoxin (NHE), and cytotoxin K (CytK or hemolysin IV). Nhe is the major toxin found in almost all enteropathogenic B. cereus and B. thuringiensis isolates.
