Nandrolone (19-nortestosterone) is a synthetic anabolic-androgenic steroid that has been used illegally as a growth promoter in livestock to increase muscle mass and improve feed efficiency. The use of nandrolone for this purpose is banned in many countries, including the European Union and China. The primary food safety concern is the potential for residues of these hormones to remain in meat, which could have endocrine-disrupting effects on humans who consume the products.
